Alimento, nutrição e saúde em destaque. Infoteca-e
LOPES, M. A..

Zooplankton nutrition study under conditions close to natural with the use of radioactive phosphorus ArchiMer
Pavlovskaya, T; Zesenko, A.
Lack of a sensitive method for in situ study of the nutrition quantitative characteristics (and food balance in particular) for zooplankton populations in low-productivity regions was the reason for developing one. For the basis of such a method the authors selected the property of radioactive phosphorus isotopes of fast and effective embedding into all plankton components. The method described above allowed not only to quantitatively determine the consumption and transportation of a substance by individual species and populations of zooplankton; it opens new horizons for investigation of the zooplanktonic association role in regeneration of mineral phosphorus.

Approche de la capacité trophique d'un écosystème conchylicole ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Prou, Jean.
After a short bibliographical study of the different approaches for determination of the trophic capacity of a bay for molluscs culture, the authors, with a global mode, show the relations between the growth performance of the oysters Crassostrea gigas in relation with the cultivated stocks. The volumes of consumed and assimilated food are calculated for the stocks in relation with the incoming volumes of water in the bay and the residence time for neap tide and spring tide. The authors find a decrease of growth rate in relation with the volume of consumed food. When it is above 60% and when the volume of assimilated food is above 20%, there is a large decrease of the growth of oysters.

Novel approach for testing the food limitation hypothesis in estuarine and coastal fish nurseries ArchiMer
Tableau, Adrien; Le Bris, H; Saulnier, E; Le Pape, Olivier; Brind'Amour, Anik.
Survival success of early life stages of fish is regulated by density-dependent effects, but the limiting factors explaining these effects have not been well identified. In coastal habitats, juveniles of many fish species occur in high concentrations and possibly compete for food resources. This study compared the ratio of food consumption to benthic prey production to test whether food availability is a major factor defining the carrying capacity of fish nurseries. We developed a method to quantify the exploitation efficiency (also called ecotrophic efficiency) of the juvenile fish feeding on benthic prey, expressed as a ratio of food consumption to food production. This method includes many sources of uncertainty and a key parameter of prey...

Ecological considerations on Xeronycteris vieirai: an endemic bat species from the brazilian semiarid macroregion Mastozool. neotrop.
We provide information on distribution, shelter use, food consumption, and reproductive biology of the nectar-feeding bat Xeronycteris vieirai. Six adult bats were mist netted near the caves and bromeliad Encholirium splendidum in a transition area between Caatinga and Cerrado biomes in Brazil. Bats were leaving the caves and were observed feeding on that bromeliad species. Our results suggest that distribution of X. vieirai may not be restricted to the Caatinga, but may occupy the entire Brazilian semiarid macroregion. Echolirium splendidum is an important resource for bats in karstic regions and its distribution might be related to the distribution and reproduction of X. vieirai.

Diet of red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)in the Southwest Atlantic OceanDocs
Ivanovic, M.L.; Brunetti, N.E..
The diet of red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)during autumn 2001 and2002 in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S;46° W-55° W)was composed mainly of fish (55-68. ), followed by squid (32-37. ) and zooplankton (8. only in 2001). Around 60. of the fish eaten was identified as myctophids and corresponded to five genera and seven species, with higher frequency of Hygophum hygomii (24-34. ). The identification of squids consumed reached 20. in 2001 and 80. in 2002 and the only species identified was O. bartramii, which implies percentages of cannibalism of 5.6. and 25.8. each year. For the range analyzed, 141-443 mm of mantle length (ML), the consumption of fish and squid did not show any relation to the size of predator. In 2001 the...

Requerimientos nutricionales en juveniles de Anguila (Anguilla rostrata): Evaluación de relaciones proteína/energía en la dieta OceanDocs
Fraga, I.; Galindo, J.; Jaime Ceballos, B..
Protein and the energy of the food are important for the growth and nutritional composition of the eel meat. These factors of the food can also affect ammonia excretion that has a marked interest in aquaculture and in the environmental impact. A completely randomized experimental design was developed during 60 days at laboratory scale, to evaluate the effect of different protein/energy ratios (P/E) on growth, oxygen consumption ratios and ammonia production of eel juvenile (Anguilla rostrata) with 0.63 ± 0.02 g of initial weight. An interaction of first grade was evidenced between protein levels and energy of the diets. The eels require growing diets containing protein levels between 45 and 55% and P/E ratios from 27.4 to 29.6 g of protein/Mj. The...

Bioenergética del besugo Pagrus pagrus. OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The utilization of the energy of food by red porgy (Pagrus pagrus Linnaeus, 1758) from the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) was studied. From the energetic point of view, it is proposed that the strategy of patitioning, utilization and storage of the energy of food, is an indicator of the organism response to the environmental conditions. The main objective was to know the proportion of the energy of food derived to the different components of the bioenergetics budget. In order to estimate the monthly energy investment in reproductive growth, chemical analysis of gonads from fishes caught by the fishery fleet and from laboratory studies were performed. Two indexes were used to calculate the energy investment in female ovaries: the proportion of net daily energy...

Ecología trófica de la merluza común (Merluccius hubbsi) del Mar Argentino. Parte 3. Consumo anual de alimento a nivel poblacional y su relación con la explotación de las pesquerías multiespecíficas. OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Angelescu, V..
The English contents gives a general view on the topics treated in this contribution developed mainly on the basis of a quantitative and ecological analysis of trophic relationships in the Argentinian Continental Shelf, in which common hake and its food species are involved (anchovy, mictophids, small fishes, squids and macrozooplankton crustaceans). The most original part consist in the application of bioenergetic and simulation models for estimating the annual food consumption by individuals and by stocks of common hake during 1970-1987, considering at the same time, the effects of commercial catches on the stockbiomasses in predator-prey relationships. From this point of view three trophic-fishery relationships are evident, namely: "Common...

Palatability enhancing nutrients for the European eel, Anguilla anguilla L. OMA
Pacolet, W.; Reynders, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
Feeding experiments with European glass eels Anguilla anguilla L. demonstrated a high degree of attractiveness for the natural diets Tubifix and cod roe. Previous experiments had indicated that incorporation of bovine spleen and/or blood into paste feeds significantly improved the growth rate and survival. To increase feed consumption, the effect of some basic components available from the current generation of chemo-attractants were evaluated. Using a modified Omission Test Procedure, we focused on monosodiumglutamate, betaine, the nucleotides IMP and GMP, and fractions of cattle blood. These components were incorporated into non-attractive casein-based test diets and administered following standardized procedures to intensively...

Possible Implications for U.S. Agriculture From Adoption of Select Dietary Guidelines AgEcon
Buzby, Jean C.; Wells, Hodan Farah; Vocke, Gary.
To help Americans meet nutritional requirements while staying within caloric recommendations, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products. This report provides one view of the potential implications for U.S. agriculture if Americans changed their current consumption patterns to meet some of those guidelines. For Americans to meet the fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain recommendations, domestic crop acreage would need to increase by an estimated 7.4 million harvested acres, or 1.7 percent of total U.S. cropland in 2002. To meet the dairy guidelines, consumption of milk and milk products would have to increase by 66 percent; an increase of that...

Can Food Stamps Do More to Improve Food Choices? An Economic Perspective--Making Healthy Food Choices Easier: Ideas From Behavioral Economics AgEcon
Mancino, Lisa; Andrews, Margaret S..
With obesity the most prevalent nutrition problem facing Americans at all economic levels, promoting diets that provide adequate nutrition without too many calories has become an important objective for the Food Stamp Program. Findings from behavioral economics suggest innovative, low-cost ways to improve the diet quality of food stamp participants without restricting their freedom of choice. Unlike more traditional economic interventions, such as changing prices or banning specific foods, the strategies explored in this brief can be targeted to those participants who want help making more healthful food choices.
